Surgery and recovery
Bennie had surgery on 9/27 to take down her ostomies and reconnect her intestines. She also had a central iv line placed for her iv nutrition and a g-tube for feeding. It was a long surgery and she got a lot of blood and platelets. She gained a lot of fluid weight and it took her some time to heal and recover.
During the surgery they found that she grew 30 new cm of jejunum. Her 2 cm ileum was not able to be saved so her jejunum connects directly to her right colon. The surgeon was happy with her growth!
She did well with starting breast milk feedings through her g-tube slowly. She is now passing her food all the way through to her diapers with no ostomy bags.
In the week after surgery, she was on the ventilator with a breathing tube. Over the week she got better and better and was able to get the breathing tube out and be on a high flow nasal cannula.
